The Ground Decides This One

A fairway wood that works beautifully off a tee and fails off a tight lie has not been fitted, it has been demonstrated. This session is built around turf contact, because that is where the club is asked to earn its place.

Why the Mat Lies to You

Testing Off Grass Is Not Optional

A hitting mat is forgiving in a specific and misleading way. A club that arrives slightly behind the ball will bounce off a mat and still produce a respectable strike. On real turf that same delivery digs, and the shot goes nowhere.

That is why every fairway wood session includes a turf strip test rather than sitting entirely on the mat. We want to see what the sole does when it meets ground that yields, and specifically where the low point of your swing arc sits relative to the ball.

A player whose low point falls two inches behind the ball needs a wider sole with more camber and a leading edge that sits higher at address. A player who compresses the ball first and takes turf afterwards can use a shallower, deeper head and will find a wide sole clumsy. Neither reads as better on paper; they are answers to different questions.

What Do You Want the Club to Do?

A Second Tee Club

Used mainly off the tee on tight holes. Wants stability and a flatter, controllable flight. Sole geometry matters less; a deeper face and lower spin head earn their place.

A Genuine Long Approach

Hit into par fives from the fairway. Needs enough launch and descent angle to hold a green, which usually means more loft than players expect and a shallower head.

A Rescue From Rough

Wants a compact head, a narrower sole and enough loft to get out cleanly. Frequently this role is better served by a hybrid, and we will say so.

Three Wood Loft Is the Most Over-Chosen Number in the Bag

A fifteen degree three wood is a difficult club for a lot of players who own one. Off a tee it is fine. Off the deck it demands a clean, shallow strike to get airborne with enough descent angle to be useful, and if the low point is not in the right place the result is a long, low runner that does not hold anything.

Sixteen and a half or eighteen degrees solves this for a very large number of golfers, and the carry loss is usually smaller than the imagination suggests because the extra loft produces a strike that is solid more often. What you lose in theoretical distance you gain in the number of shots that actually come off.

We test this rather than argue about it. Two blocks, two lofts, and the numbers say which one you should carry. Players are frequently surprised, and the surprise is almost always in the same direction.

Shaft

Not Simply a Shorter Driver Shaft

Fairway wood shafts are usually a little heavier and a little stiffer in the tip than the driver shaft from the same family, and there is a reason for that. The club is being asked to strike a ball sitting on the ground with a descending or level delivery, which loads the tip differently.

A tip that is too soft here presents extra loft at exactly the wrong moment and adds spin to a club that generally already has enough. We tend toward a firmer tip in fairway woods than in the driver, then check it against the numbers rather than assuming.

Length

Shorter Helps More Here Than Anywhere

If shortening the driver tightens the strike pattern, shortening the fairway wood tightens it a great deal more, because the margin for error on a ball sitting on the ground is far smaller than on a tee.

Half an inch off a three wood is one of the most reliable improvements available in a fitting bay. It costs almost nothing in clubhead speed and it moves the strike toward the centre of a face that is considerably less forgiving than a driver's.
