Most Driver Problems Are Strike Problems
Before we talk about loft, shaft or head design, we find out where on the face the ball is actually landing. In the majority of driver sessions that single reading explains the complaint the player walked in with.
Impression Tape Comes Before Anything Else
A driver face is not uniform. Strike an inch above centre and you get more launch with less spin; strike an inch below and you get the opposite, usually with a noticeable loss of ball speed. Move toward the heel or the toe and gear effect adds curvature that has nothing to do with your path.
That means the same swing can produce four quite different ball flights depending only on contact point. Any fitting that starts from ball data without knowing the contact point is trying to solve an equation with a hidden variable.
So the first block of a driver session goes on tape. We read the vertical spread, the horizontal spread and where the densest cluster sits, and that reading directs everything that follows. A cluster sitting low and centred is a tee height and head design conversation. A cluster spread wide across the face is a length and stability conversation. A cluster high on the toe is often a posture and lie conversation before it is anything else.

A half inch of vertical miss can be worth several hundred rpm of spin. That is more than most loft changes.
How the Ninety Minutes Is Spent

Warm-up and the Baseline Block
Ten minutes loosening up off the clock, then ten to twelve shots with the driver you brought, taped and filmed. Radar records ball speed, launch, spin, attack angle, path and face angle.

Tee Height and Ball Position
Free, immediate and frequently decisive. If the tape cluster is low on the face, this is tested before any component change, because a head swap that fixes a symptom caused by tee height is an expensive way to solve a free problem.

Head Design and Loft Setting
Stability versus low spin, tested against your actual dispersion rather than against a category label. Loft is adjusted through the hosel sleeve so the range is genuinely continuous.

Shaft Weight, Then Profile
Weight first, because it moves tempo and strike. Then bend profile and tip section, tuned to close whatever gap is left between your launch and spin numbers and the window you need.

Length and Swingweight
Shorter is frequently better and almost nobody arrives expecting to hear it. A half inch off often tightens the strike pattern enough to gain ball speed even as clubhead speed drops slightly.

Confirmation Block and Report
A final block on the winning configuration, compared side by side against the baseline. Both sets of numbers go on the written specification you leave with.
A Useful Launch Window

Reference brackets, not targets. Your correct window depends on attack angle and on how much curvature you actually produce.
The Number That Reframes the Loft Question
Two players with identical clubhead speed can need loft settings two full degrees apart, and the reason is usually attack angle. Hitting up on the ball adds launch and removes spin for free; hitting down does the reverse and makes a low-spin head actively unhelpful.
We measure it in the baseline block and use it to frame the whole session. A player delivering a negative attack angle with a driver has three routes available: change ball position and tee height, change head and loft, or change the delivery itself. Only the first two are fitting problems, and we will tell you plainly if the third is where your yardage is hiding.
What we will not do is prescribe a low-spin head to a player whose spin is high because of a steep attack. That combination looks clever on a spec sheet and produces a ball flight that falls out of the sky.
Four Things Driver Sessions Keep Turning Up
Too Long
Stock driver length has crept upward for years. A great many players strike the centre of the face more often with half an inch removed.
Too Little Loft
Loft is bought like a status symbol. Adding a degree or two frequently adds carry, and it almost never costs what players fear it will.
Shaft Too Light
The lightest option is not the fastest for most players. Ten grams more often produces both better sequencing and a tighter pattern.
Wrong Head Class
Low-spin heads sold to players who needed stability. The strike map settles this argument in about four minutes.
Fitting a Driver for Wind
A sustained crosswind is the normal condition on a Wichita course, not an occasional inconvenience. That changes what a good driver fitting looks like. A ball flight that curves eight yards in still air curves considerably more in fifteen miles an hour of side wind, and the spin number that produces pleasant carry on a calm range can turn into a ballooning problem by mid-afternoon.
We take that into account explicitly. Where two configurations are close, the one with less curvature and a slightly lower spin figure gets the recommendation, because it is the one that survives the conditions you will actually play in.
Keeping the Head You Already Own
Modern driver heads are adjustable enough that a good many sessions end with the head you brought and a different shaft, a different length, or simply a different sleeve setting. That is a small invoice and it happens often enough that we plan for it.
If your driver is more than about five years old, the honest position is that head technology has moved on in stability terms and a replacement is more likely to be worth it. We will show you the comparison rather than assert it.
